Mr. Calvin Shakesnider

Born on March 1, 1957, to Clarence Shakesnider Sr. and Hilda Castille Shakesnider in Leonville, Louisiana, Calvin was the sixth of nine children. He passed away on March 6, 2026, at the age of 69. Calvin was a proud graduate of Leonville High School, Class of 1975. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army in June of 1975. Over the course of his 20-year military career, Calvin traveled to various parts of the world and throughout the United States, dedicating his life to service before retiring honorably as a Sergeant First Class (E-7). After his military service, he continued working and connecting with the community through his roles at Walmart and Dollar General in Opelousas. Calvin had a deep love for the simple joys of life, especially fishing. Those who knew him best knew that if he wasn’t at home, he could likely be found by the bayou with a fishing pole in hand. He also enjoyed watching wrestling and rarely missed a good WWE match. Beyond his hobbies, Calvin had a heart for giving back. He actively served his community as a member of VFW Post 5153, Enoch Lodge of the East #01 under the Valley of the Kings Grand Lodge, and IFBS Lodge. Through these organizations, he remained committed to fellowship, service, and uplifting those around him. Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Sr. and Hilda C. Shakesnider, and his brothers Clarence Jr., Willie Lee, Martin J., Rodney J., Doris J., and Donald Shakesnider. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Diana Shakesnider; his children, Maria Shakesnider, Christina Shakesnider, Samantha Shakesnider-McGriff (Anthony McGriff), and Calandre Shakesnider; and his beloved grandchildren, Jaida Henderson, Josiah Shakesnider, Jordan McGriff, Janiyah Moss, Jizzelle McGriff, and Jream McGriff. He is also survived by his brother, Hillary Shakesnider (Clorissa Shakesnider), and sister, Shirley Shakesnider, along with an enormous number of nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, loving friends, and members of the community. Known for his enormous stature, unforgettable presence, and vibrant personality, Calvin’s love for his family and friends was unmatched. He stood as a proud pillar of the Shakesnider family and embodied the spirit of #ShakesniderStrong. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the Opelousas Civic Center in Opelousas, Louisiana. Visitation will begin at 8:00 AM at the Civic Center. Burial will follow in St. Leo the Great Catholic Church Cemetery in Leonville, Louisiana, where military honors will be rendered.
