https://www.lsbefd.state.la.us/wp-content/uploads/20200401135955.pdf Harriet Rachel Valmont, daughter of the late Paul H. and Lena Wilson Valmont, was born in Gradney Island, Louisiana on June 10, 1926. Harriet was raised and educated in Opelousas, Louisiana / St. Landry Parish. She spent her adult life working as a cafeteria worker in the St. Landry Parish School System. Along with cooking, she enjoyed being with her friends, family and grandchildren. She was known for her annual birthday parties, where the entire neighborhood, friends and family would gather at her home, knowing there would be good food, drinks and a grand celebration. Some of her favorite pastimes included sitting in her swing surrounded by her flowers and birds, keeping up with politics and current events and canning fruits and vegetables from her garden. She was an avid gardener and was well known for her green thumb for which she won several prizes for the ‘Best Flower Garden’ in the 1970’s and 80’s. She enjoyed traveling and went on trips to Paris, France and London, England. Her final trip was to Chicago, Illinois in 2018 to visit her beloved nephew, Merritt P. Marks. Her kitchen was the heart of her home where birthdays were celebrated, coffee was served, and you can’t forget her famous sweet potato pies. Her pride and joy was raising and nurturing her great-great granddaughter, Acacia. She spent her days teaching her about life, flowers, nature, and Christian values. Harriet was affectionately known for her youthful and selfless personality. She embraced her roles as the family matriarch, sister, mother, and grandmother, immensely. She was active in her church and treasured each and everyone in her life. She lived her life according to Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Her spirit and zest for life was infectious in that she made friends wherever she went. On April 17, 2020, at the age of 93, our beloved Harriet entered into eternal rest at her home surrounded by her family. She is now reunited with her parents Paul H. and Lena Valmont; brothers Hammond Valmont, Paul Valmont, and Bernice Lewis; and sisters Viola Marks (Carlton); Ophelia Campbell; Velma Rachal (Curley); Selena Nevills (Clayton); Nathale Lewis (Ed); Rose Simms (Joe); Louella Barnes (Samuel); Dora Antoine (Oliver); and Alma Bertrand (Sidney). She leaves to cherish her beautiful legacy in life: her sister, Juanita Blackwell (Sidney, deceased); children Don Alfred Joseph III of Opelousas, La.; Charles Jerome Valmont (Debra) of Houston, Tx.; Beverly Christy (Dr. Lawrence Wayne) of Lafayette, La.; Janet Malveaux (James “Shimmy”) of Houston, Tx.; Susan Lloyd (Demetrius) of Grand Prairie, Tx.; Tracey Valmont of Opelousas, La.; and Lorraine Dominick of Opelousas, La.; grandchildren: Christopher Don Joseph, Antonio Joseph, Don Alfred Joseph IV; Quintessa Winbush, Kelly Pelican-Reed, Dwayne Pelican, Theothis Landry, Katina Key, Tangela Fontenot, Charles Jerome Valmont Jr., Natasha Christy, Nikki Honoré, Lawrence Wayne Christy II, Marcus Pitre, Porscha Valmont; Morgan Valmont, Jordan Lloyd, Vaughn-zel Lloyd, Mya Ashlan Lloyd, Antonia Dominick, Cory Datrice, Jonias Datrice, Bryce Datrice, Jashon Dominick; as well as a host of great and great-great grandchildren, relatives, and friends. Our beloved, Harriet, will be laid to rest at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas, Louisiana.
