Mrs. Lovey Marie Guillory

MALLET- Lovey Marie Guillory, born April 17, 1939, in Mallet, Louisiana, entered eternal rest on January 28, 2020 in Washington, DC on her feast day, Feast day of Saint Thomas Aquinas. She was known to many by different names. Love, Lovey, Lover and Marie, and she touched many people’s lives as a wife, sister, aunt, cousin, boss, author, entrepreneur, and friend. With humble beginnings of being born on the kitchen floor in Bois Mallet, Marie left that small hamlet in pursuit of education and a life of service to those in need. As a young nun, Lovey was a member of Saint Katherine Drexel, Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Her professional life spans service in a convent, as a teacher, and then later as a lawyer who represented rural communities domestically and internationally. She held a law degree from Rutgers Law School, and undergraduate and graduate degrees from Blessed Sacrament College and Loyola University of the South, respectively. She was a member of the Texas, Pennsylvania, D.C., and New Jersey bars, the bar of the United States Supreme Court, and most of the federal appellate courts. She was active in political and civic circles in cities wherever she lived, serving on many community and non-profit Boards in Washington, D.C., across the Washington metro area, and in Houston, TX. She was an opera fan and her hobbies sewing and gardening. Most knew her for her tenderness, kindness, and generosity. Her dining room table always had a seat for one more, and everyone was welcome. Her doors were open for family and friends alike, and many loved her dearly as an in-situ, mother, grandmother, aunt, mentor, educator, confidant, and safe haven. She is survived by her devoted husband of 41 years, Joseph R. Cooney, three sisters: Estrelda Sonnier, Cherrie (Hilman) Papillion, Brenda (Alfred) Guillory Bowie and; four brothers: Lucius (Elizabeth) Guillory, David (Tracy) Guillory, Paul (Joan) Guillory, Thomas (Linda) Guillory, and; dozens of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. The family requests a quiet hour be observed on Friday, February 14, 2020, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Mallet, LA from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. with committal services immediately following. Interment will be in St. Ann Catholic Church Cemetery. Final disposition entrusted to Williams Funeral Home of Opelousas, LA, 817 E. South Street, 337.942.2037.
