Mr. Martin Lee Chevis Sr.

On October 25, 1959, God gave the world a sweet baby boy, Martin Lee Chevis. God chose Monday, September 5, 2022 at 2:26 PM to call a beautiful and blessed soul home. Martin was born to the late Joseph Lus Chevis and Mary Olevia Chavis of rural Opelousas, Louisiana. Martin Sr. was married once to his now former wife and lifelong friend, Genny Lee Coleman, where God blessed them with one son, Martin Lee Chevis Jr. He lived his life as a true example of the well-known quote by Robert Greene, “Jack of all trades is a master of none…”. He was a lover of swing out music and dancing. He was a fast talker and often had a razor on his tongue while smiling at you. He made his presence known when walking into a room. He enjoyed visiting with people and making them laugh with his jokes and hilarious commentary. He was a devoted momma’s boy and was not afraid to claim such a title. He enjoyed watching his favorite tv shows and the news. Although he did not say it often, he most truly loved his one and only son and three wonderful grandchildren. Despite going through the pain and discomfort from what ultimately took his life, he never complained. His spirit never broke, and he was ready for the plans God had for him. He was able to feel the love of his family all around him up until the moment he took his last breath. He leaves to cherish memories: one former wife, Genny Lee Coleman of Washington; one son, Martin Lee Chevis Jr. (Kenya) of Carencro, LA; two brothers, Francis Xavier Chevis of Carencro, LA; Joseph Lonzy (Dorothy) Chevis of Houston, TX; nine sisters, Lois Rita Benibo of Chattanooga, TN; Linda Gail Chevis, Geneva Ann Chevis, Josephine Ann Chevis, Ramona Faye Chevis, Carrie Jean Chevis, Gloria Anne (Kevin) Chevis-Smith all of Opelousas, LA; Dr. Mary Melanie Chevis of Baton Rouge, LA, and Susan Marie (Jeff) Teatro of TX; three grandchildren (MarKenzie, Kenyon, and Kendra) of Carencro, LA; one godchild, Jason (Tonya) Dean of Dallas, TX; one living uncle, Louis Chavis of Jennings, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Joseph Lus and Mary Olevia “Ya” Chevis, two brothers, Charles Lee Chevis and John Louis Chevis; grandparents, Thomas Chavis, Sr. and Josephine Charlot Chavis; great-nephew, Cornell Alexander Dean and Brandon Chevis; aunts, Alexandria Lavergne, Viola Ware, Onetha Chevis, Mary Alice Boutte and Aline Leger; uncles, Alvin Chavis, Calvin Chavis and Thomas Chavis; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Chevis; brother-in-law, Dr. Benibo S. Benibo; paternal great-grandparents, Marie Green and Louis Chavis; maternal great-grandparents, Alexandrine Cretein and Don Louis Charlot II. Homegoing services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lawtell, LA. Visiting hours will be observed from 8:00 AM to 10:45 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church. Pastor Stanley Jawa, S.V.D. will officiate at the Mass of Christian burial.
