Mrs. Vurlee Thompson Simmons A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Little Zion Baptist Church in Opelousas, LA., for Vurlee Simmons, 79, who entered eternal rest, Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, LA. Pastor Charles Bryant will officiate at the services. Mrs. Simmons is survived by her loving, committed and devoted husband of almost 60 years, Ruben Simmons, Sr. of Opelousas, LA.; six children, Mary Ann Roberts (Louis), Rubin Simmons, Jr. (Anna) both of Opelousas, LA., Viola “Molly” Chenier, Norma Jean Lemond both of Baton Rouge, LA., Judy Ann Madison (Robert) of Shreveport, LA. and Kathy Marie Kennerson of Lafayette, LA.; 11 grandchildren, Monique Roberts, Sekedra Simmons, Latorshia Chenier, Anthony Simmons (Brittany), Marissa Lemond-Idusuyi (Dickson), Marlon Lemond (Brittany), Marcus Lemond, Robert Madison, Jr. (Ashley), Jamel Madison, Kayla Kennerson and Kantrell Kennerson; 12 great grandchildren; 11 siblings, Herman Simmons (Merline) of Opelousas, LA., Roy Ford of Galveston, TX., Thomas Thompson (Helen), Abram Thompson (Irma), Collins Thompson (Maudry), Lawrence Thompson, Shirley Brigham (Kimmett), Maudra Edison (Morris), Aaron Thompson, Betty Johnson (Leon) all of Houston, TX. and Moses Thompson, Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA.; 3 special cousins reared as sisters, Dorothy Thomas, Vivian Thomas and Marjorie Goodwill all of Opelousas, LA. and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her father, Moses Thompson, Sr.; mother, Viola Ford; siblings, Hazel Hunt, Cora Marshall, Rosie Ford, Helen Taylor, Rosa Lee Albert, Virginia Keys, Jane Walker, Robert Ford, Jr. and Marshall Ford and a grandchild, Schewanna A. Simmons. Visiting hours will be observed from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday, September 16, 2011 at Little Zion Baptist Church in Opelousas, LA. Visiting hours will resume on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Little Zion Baptist Church, beginning at 7:00 A.M.
