Obituary for Donald James White Mr. Donald James White, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished brother, and above all, a good man, passed away on February 13, 2025, at the age of 78. A lifelong resident of Opelousas, he was born on March 24, 1946, and dedicated his life to family, faith, and friendship. Donald worked tirelessly to provide for his loved ones, holding various jobs throughout the Opelousas area with dedication and pride. He was a man of quiet strength and deep kindness, always ready with a helping hand and a warm smile. A true gentleman, he took great pride in dressing sharp, and his love for music brought joy to those around him. His presence was a source of comfort and encouragement to all who knew him. A devout Catholic, Donald was a decades-long member of the Knights of Peter Claver and a faithful parishioner of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. His unwavering faith guided his life, shaping his values of generosity, humility, and service. Above all, family was the heart of Donald’s world. He was married to Eva Gradnigo White for 45 years until her passing in 2014, a union built on love, faith, and devotion. He leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and unwavering support that will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He is survived by his beloved daughter Melissa White Hawkins and son-in-law Reginald Hawkins of Baton Rouge; his brother Moses White, Jr. (Gail) of Lafayette; his sisters Ruby Richard of Opelousas, Catherine Guillory (Lee) of San Antonio, TX, Thelma Simien White of Opelousas, and Patricia Henry (Paul) of Sugarland TX; his dear Aunt Mrs. Bridget White of Opelousas; sister-in-law Mercedes White of Breaux Bridge; and Candace Cavalier of Gonzales, whom he loved as a granddaughter. He is also fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, extended family, and many dear friends. Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Gradnigo White; his parents, Arithia Green White and Moses White, Sr.; and his brothers, Joseph B. White and Kenneth White. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. Interment will follow at St. Leo the Great Catholic Cemetery, 126 Church Road, Leonville, LA. The family requests visiting hours be observed on Friday, February 21, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at Williams Funeral Home, Opelousas, with the rosary led by the Legion of Mary. Additional visitation will take place on Saturday, February 22, from 8:00 to 9:30 AM before the funeral service. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Williams Funeral Home of Opelousas, 817 E. South Street, 337-942-2037. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Donald’s memory to the St. Landry Parish Council on Aging, honoring his lifelong commitment to family and community.
