Ms. Esther Mae Janice

Visitation for Ms. Esther Mae Janice will be held at St. Mathilda’s Catholic Church (800 E Laurel Ave, Eunice, LA 70535) on Thursday, June 27 beginning at 8 AM with funeral services proceeding at 10 AM. On Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 8:54 AM, Ms. Esther Mae Janice peacefully entered eternal rest in her bed at her residence in Lafayette, surrounded by the unconditional love of her family and the love and warm embrace of our Heavenly Father. She was a kind, caring, and loving soul who was always willing to help or give whatever she could to anyone she knew. Born Esther Lavergne to her late parents Felix Lavergne and Alice Bellard on May 12, 1929, she lived a peaceful, quiet, and fulfilling life as a housewife and manual worker, tending to her family’s small farm after being united in holy matrimony during the 1960s with her late husband Vincent Janice, whom she cared for until his passing in 1982. As an adamant believer in Christ, Ms. Janice diligently attended church services as she moved locations throughout her life, frequenting both St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elton, La. and Christ the King Church in Terrytown, La. Ms. Janice is survived by one daughter, Shirley Hudgins (John); one honorary daughter, Eldee Allison; one honorary son, Wallace Johness; two godchildren, Malcom Lavergne and Rosaline Williams; three grandchildren, Marlon Hudgins (Dedra), Franchesska Marcel (Kendall), and Angela Hudgins; four great grandchildren, Rochon Hudgins, Terrance Hudgins, Terrell Hudgins, and Archell Cheatteam; one great-great grandchild, Sorai Hudgins; and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends—all of whom love and will miss her dearly. In her younger days, Ms. Janice particularly loved to shop, especially for clothing with her granddaughter Angela. The two would frequent multiple malls and smaller stores together, creating a remarkably strong bond. As Ms. Janice grew older, Angela gave the best possible care to her, and will miss creating beautiful, loving memories with her grandmother. Ms. Janice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vincent Janice; and 12 siblings: Austin Lavergne, Auzima Lavergne, Azena Lavergne, Elise Lavergne, Felician Lavergne, Junior Lavergne, Mary Lavergne, Melvin Lavergne, Odelia DeClouette, Odeal Espree, Onezia Guillory, and Willis Lavergne. The pallbearers chosen to transfer Ms. Janice to her final resting place are her beloved family members: grandson, Terry Johness; godson, Malcolm Lavergne; grandson, Clifford Allison; and great grandsons, Rochon Hudgins, Terrance Hudgins, and Terrell Hudgins. The beloved honorary pallbearers chosen on behalf of Ms. Janice are her daughter, Shirley Hudgins; son-in-law John Hudgins; grandchildren, Marlon Hudgins, Franchesska Marcel, and Angela Hudgins; goddaughter, Rosaline Williams; and great grandson, Donovon Wilson.
