Mrs. Lucy Mae Hyche

Lucy Mae Lastrapes Hyche was born in Lafayette, Louisiana on March 25, 1954, to Alcide and Cordelia Charles Lastrapes. She was the ninth of nine children. Lucy lived in Arnaudville, Louisiana from her birth through the majority of her adolescent years. Lucy attended St. Peter Claver Elementary School in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Lucy’s family moved to Opelousas, Louisiana at her age of thirteen. She attended Holy Ghost Elementary and High School, Opelousas, Louisiana. Lucy completed her last year of high school at Opelousas Catholic High School (the newly named school after the consolidation of Holy Ghost School and the Academy of the Immaculate Conception). Lucy was in the first graduating class of Opelousas Catholic High School. To further her education, Lucy enrolled at T. H. Harris Vocational-Technical School, Opelousas, Louisiana. She received honorable awards upon her completion of a secretarial training program at T.H. Harris Vocational -Technical School. Lucy married Jesse Davis Hyche. From this union, four beautiful children were born. Prior to her marriage, Lucy, timid and shy, had lived a quiet and reserved life with her family. After marrying, she became adventurous and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin; later to Mequon, Wisconsin; Walls, Mississippi and most recently, to Richmond, Virginia. Lucy passed away, peacefully, on the night of February 11, 2026. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Dorothy Martha Lastrapes and Rita Melbarine Lastrapes Young; oldest precious child, Dreyfus Bartholomew Hyche; nephew, Grant Charles Winand; father-in-law, Sherman Hyche, Jr.; mother-in-law, Rosie Hyche; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Hyche and Selena Colomb Lastrapes; brothers-in-law, Jesse D. Prudhomme, Ortman H. Townsend, Jr., Michael Young; and Sherman Hyche III. She leaves to cherish her memories, her spouse, Jesse Davis Hyche, Sr.; daughters, Ingrid Nicole Hyche Cooper (Thomas) and Jessica Rose Hyche; son, Jesse Davis Hyche, Jr.; grandchildren, Kyle Cooper, Bryce Cooper, Cole Cooper, Bella Grace Cooper; sisters, Catherine Ruth Lastrapes Townsend, Geraldine Lastrapes Winand (Roy), Jacqueline Marie Lastrapes Prudhomme, Norma Cynthia Lastrapes Jolivette (Eugene); brothers, Edmond Ignatius Lastrapes and Charles Alexander Lastrapes (Mildred); and brother-in-law, Willie Hyche (Rita). She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, who will also cherish her memories. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating a life well lived will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. Family and friends are invited to gather in fellowship during visiting hours from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Williams Funeral Home. Following the Mass, interment will take place at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Cemetery in Grand Coteau, LA. Rev. Justin Arockiasamy, S.V.D. will serve as celebrant, leading us in prayer and thanksgiving for a life that brought joy and blessings to so many. Lucy was steadfast in her Catholic Christian upbringing and beliefs. Lucy was a devoted spouse, mother and grandmother; may she rest in eternal peace and goodness!
